This little sweater is knit from the top-down and is almost seamless. A collection of small lengths of different yarns is an excellent choice for easy one-of-a-kind results — a great way to use those workshop or goodie bag samples. If using different yarns, you can plan ahead on color or texture placement based on the order the parts of the sweater are knit (i.e. neckband and yoke, each sleeve, then body.). Some choices are light to dark, dark to light, mixture of smooth and textured, or whatever. Or just use the yarns in a serendipitous fashion, letting the colors and textures fall where they may!
Note: gauge and needle size are not terribly important -- these are guidelines only, so use whatever you have that is close and just have fun
Using smaller ndl, cast on 20 sts.
Beginning with start of cast on, arrange sts on four ndls as follows: 6 sts each on ndls 1 and 3; 4 sts each on ndls 2 and 4.
Join without twisting.
Work k1,p1 ribbing for 2 rnds.
Change to larger ndls.
Rnd 1: k to end.
Rnds 3 - 8: rep rnds 1 - 2 three more times. (52 sts after rnd 8)
Knit one more rnd, then knit across ndl 1 once more.
On ndl 2 only (12 sts) and continuing with larger ndls, work in stockinette stitch back and forth for 7 rows, decrease each side on rows 5 and 7. (8 sts after row 7)
Change to smaller ndls and work k1,p1 ribbing for 2 rnds.
Bind off. Cut yarn and sew seam.
Rep for other sleeve, attaching yarn at beginning of ndl 4 and working sts on ndl 4 only.
Continuing on larger ndls, arrange the remaining 28 sts on 3 or 4 ndls as you prefer.
Attach yarn at one of the underarms. Mark this point as beginning of rnd.
Knit for 9 rnds.
Change to smaller ndls.
Work k1,p1 ribbing for 2 rnds. Bind off.
Weave in ends invisibly.
Steam to block.
Insert hanger in neckline and secure invisibly if desired.
Optionally, attach coordinating yarn loop through hanger for additional length in hanging as an ornament.
