Errant Ankles Lace Socks in 2 colors

A fraternal 2-color variation of HeartStrings knitting pattern #A67

This is a simple variation of the original Errant Ankles Lace Sock pattern using 2-colors instead of a single color.

Errant Ankles Lace Socks Fraternal 2-color variation

I knit these socks in Cleckheaton Angora/Silk (unfortunately discontinued). Since I did not have enough of either color to make a pair of socks, or even enough of one or the other to make a matched set, they became a mis-matched set. I love them!

You could easily make these socks according to the original pattern, and just make your own 2-color (or more!) socks. Make them fraternal twins like I did for extra fun. To make the change in color on the leg, work the modified the Mock cuff ridge with these substitute instructions:
Rnd 1: p with cuff color.
Rnd 2: k.
Rnd 3: p.
Rnd 4: Work your ribbing repeat pattern (e.g. *p2, k5, rep from * to eor).

Because the yarn was worsted weight, I adjusted the pattern to work 6 repeats of the 8-stitch lace pattern. Therefore I began with 48 sts, and decreased to 44 sts for the ankle shaping, and proportionally changed subsequent stitch counts for the increase in gauge from that in the original pattern.

Since I felt the 8-stitch version of this lace pattern in worsted weight was too wide to be practical for a lace-banded heel (there would have hardly been any stitches left over for the actual heel flap!), I chose to work a plain heel. I transitioned the instep from 3 pattern repeats down to 1, as opposed to 4 pattern repeats to 2 as in the original pattern. I also substituted opposite-leaning decreases for the gusset shaping (i.e. k2tog for SSK, and vice versa). This demonstrates the big difference in looks that a seemingly minor change like this can make to the pattern flow. I also substituted a wedge toe.
